Director of Data Engineering

Physicians Mutual is seeking a transformational Director of Data Engineering to unify and lead our data engineering practice across operational integration and analytics platforms. This is a newly defined leadership position built to modernize, harmonize, and scale how data flows across our organization.

As the Director of Data Engineering, youâ??ll be at the forefront of reshaping our data capabilitiesâ??modernizing our data pipelines running across private, hybrid and public cloud (AWS). Youâ??ll lead multiple teams that currently support operational systems and analytics independently and will unify them into a cross-functional, agile data engineering practice with shared skills, standards, and overlapping capabilities. You will drive innovation while ensuring ongoing support for critical systems, coach and mentor talented engineers, and enable elasticity in team capacity to tackle strategic priorities.

 

What Youâ??ll Do

• Lead, grow, and mentor high-performing data engineering teams across both operational and analytic domains, spanning:
  • Operational ETL and system integration
  • Analytic ELT, data warehousing, BI, and data science enablement
• Architect and oversee robust, scalable data pipelines using modern cloud-native technologies
• Collaborate across IT and business units to prioritize work, align resources, and deliver strategic data projects
• Champion agile delivery and promote an environment of continuous learning, reuse, and team collaboration
• Ensure stable, robust and compliant operations of production data pipelines and batch cycle
• Ensure 24/7 coverage for production support and close collaboration with operations team
• Strong focus on project delivery and ROI realization in close collaboration with our agile PMO

• Legacy IBM DataStage, DB2 UDB, MF DB2
   

What Weâ??re Looking For

• 15+ years of experience in data engineering or closely related fields (13 years of experience with a Masterâ??s degree)
• 5+ years of direct management experience in Agile/Scrum delivery environments
• Deep expertise in designing and building modern data pipelines and integration patterns
• Proven ability to lead technical teams through transformation initiatives
• Demonstrated ability to develop teams and broaden skillsets to work across a newer tech stack
• Strong team-building, problem-solving, and interpersonal leadership skills
• Demonstrated experience balancing innovation with operational excellence
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (Masterâ??s preferred)
