A Brief Overview
The Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) plays an essential role in supporting genetic counselors and medical geneticists in delivering high-quality care to patients across the lifespan. This position involves working in both inpatient and outpatient settings, across multiple clinical sites. The GCA contributes significantly to the efficiency and effectiveness of the genetics care team by ensuring accurate and timely information is available and effectively communicated across the care team.

Essential Functions

  • Clinical Responsibilities:
    • Preparing patient cases by obtaining and organizing prior clinical notes and medical records from various specialties
    • Conducting detailed review and retrieval of prior genetic and other relevant test results to streamline clinical evaluation
    • Gathering and documenting comprehensive personal and family medical histories
    • Coordinating genetic testing with laboratories, including completing necessary paperwork and navigating insurance requirements
    • Managing follow-up communication with patients and tracking outstanding genetic test results
    • Ensuring relevant clinical and genetic information is accurately deployed to the appropriate providers to support coordinated care
  • Administrative Responsibilities:
    • Maintain database (Data Entry) on genetic testing being done on clinic patients
    • Manage list of pending results and perform follow-up when required
    • Draft test result letters to patients and referring providers.
    • Provide Miscellaneous support to supervisors or genetics personnel


Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma Required and
  • Associate's Degree Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • 1 year Prior experience in healthcare setting or in administrative position Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills, with attention to detail and confidentiality
  • Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and comfort with electronic medical records (EMR) systems
  • Team orientated profession with ability to work independently
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
