A Brief Overview
The Diet Clerk serves as a formal member of the Patient Room Services team, carries out all menu selection responsibilities by answering questions, troubleshooting, facilitating special food requests for inpatients, printing reports, printing menus, inputting patient meal/snack selections into the system and helping check meal trays for accuracy during peak mealtimes.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for reviewing meal orders after submission from patients in Computrition; validates all selections align with current diet order and restrictions. Answers inbound calls for trays from units which do not have electronic patient menus. Answers all questions in a courteous manner and provides guidance on meal selections as appropriate. Prints patient menus to tray line for meal assembly and delivery to the patient. May serve as tray line checker in the absence of a supervisor or designated checker.
  • Responsible for reviewing diet orders from the electronic medical record and validating restrictions within Computrition. Provides support to the patient Room service staff as needed. Prints patient room service reports, assists in troubleshooting, facilitates special food requests for patients, inputs patient meal/snack requests into the food system software, verifies patient allergies in the food service software, assists in obtaining patient meal/snack requests, checks meal trays during peak mealtimes as needed and gives educational in-services to staff. Menu planning with inpatients on restricted diet orders, i.e., renal diets and eating disorder inpatients. Inputs CHO meal patterns into Computrition.
  • Interview and educate patients/caregivers on food preferences, restricted diet planning, approved basic nutrition education per dietitian direction. Completes appropriate documentation in the EMR. Contacts patients who have not selected meals prior to the end of each mealtime to inquire if a meal is desired.
  • Collects calorie count data from patient bedside when indicated and correctly inputs patient food intake into the food service software and then inputs the results of the data into the patients EMR every 24 hours when a calorie count order is active. Provide education to caregivers when calorie counts are ordered to instruct on the overall process.
  • Completes annual mandatory job-related training and education. Attend majority of staff meetings.
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
  • Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section


Education Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in dietetic technician studies, culinary arts, or related field; related work experience may substitute for education if competency is demonstrated. Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Experience working as a dietetic, in nutrition or food service Preferred and
  • Experience working a healthcare environment Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of HACCP Principles
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of basic nutrition
  • Skill in using a computer (e.g., MS Outlook, Excel, and Word, etc.)
  • Skill in basic math calculations
  • Skill in critical thinking and problem solving
  • Skill in interviewing patients/caregivers to determine needs/preferences
  • Ability to interact with families, visitors, and vendors
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to interact with professional staff
  • Ability to interact with room service and cafeteria personnel
  • Ability to multitask effectively

Licenses and Certifications

  • Food Handlers Card Current and valid Food Handlers Certification (ANSI-accredited only) within 90 Days Required
