**Provisionally licensed counselors are able to obtain hours needed towards full licensure at a faster pace due to NOVA TC being a residential treatment facility

 

The Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor is responsible for providing counseling and re-socialization skill training for the treatment of individuals displaying a variety of issues related to alcohol and drug use according to the philosophy and treatment methods of the Therapeutic Community.  The Counselor functions as the primary leader, teacher, counselor and parent figure in the treatment milieu.  The Counselor is also a front-line role model or the means by which program members can come to terms with and overcome maladaptive and/or dysfunctional patterns of perception, thought, and behavior.    

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  • Associates Degree in Substance Abuse Counseling preferred or High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Current LADC or PLADC through the Division of Alcoholism, Drug Abuse and Addiction Services required.
  • One year human services experience preferred. 
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office computer software and Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to manage crisis situations. 
  • Knowledge of the psychological effects of chemical dependency on human behavior.
  • Ability to conduct structured clinical interviews for the purpose of assessing and diagnosing Substance Use Disorders.
  • Ability to prepare reports relative to Substance Abuse Evaluations in a concise, lucid, and timely manner.
  • Valid driver’s license that meets agency standards and ability to meet transportation needs of agency.

 

Major Responsibilities

 

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of a therapeutic environment that fulfills the physical, emotional, social, and behavioral needs of the program members.
  • Provide on-site supervision of program members and ensure that all treatment activities occur as scheduled.
  • Establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with assigned program members in order to provide guidance and work toward resolution of issues related to chemical dependency and correlated personality/behavioral problems associated with substance use disorders.
  • Maintain an accurate clinical record that documents program member’s service needs, treatment plans, progress and discharge planning utilizing agency format and standards for clinical record management.
  • Conduct Substance Abuse evaluations and prepare assessment reports when needed or assigned.
  • Facilitate group, individual and family counseling activities.
  • Conduct didactic activities relative to addiction and recovery.
  • Prepare for, attend, and participate in Case Review meetings.
  • Maintain contact with outside agencies in order to fulfill necessary needs of program members.
  • Assist in the supervision of program members in treatment activities.
  • Assist with the compliance of all applications Federal, State, local and agency regulatory laws, standards and policies.
